About the project
Irish Textiles X
Dries Van Noten
The Irish textiles X Dries Van Noten project was about looking at the historic way textiles were made in Ireland, I looked at these elements through the process of embroidery, patchwork, weaving, knitwear and crochet.
Also looking at the analysis of the way Noten works through his collection and his own textile techniques.
Combing these textile techniques and the design approach of Noten I created a selection of textiles as well as a illustrated 6 piece collection.
Sketchbook Pages
I started designing by analysing the way in which Dries Van Noten makes his silhouette and used his textile and printed designs on his pieces.
From this I looked at the textiles I had designed and began to use them to influence my design work.
Swatches
There was a large focus on textiles through this project. Through the research I looked into different types of Irish textiles and put a real focus on machine and hand embroidery, patchwork, appliqué
Whitework Embroidery
I used white duchess satin and used an embroidery hoop to create flower and leaf motifs using white embroidery thread, I used various French knot techniques and stitches in this swatch to create a very Irish brambly feel to this textile
Machine Embroidery on Organza
Using organza as my base I used machine embroidery to create the bramble flowers. By winding the bobbin in embroidery thread and using a embroidery hoop I was able to keep
Machine Embroidery on organza
Using gold organza as my base I used yellow embroidery thread in the same technique of winding the bobbin in embroidery thread I created various sizes of yellow flowers on this textile.
Punchcard Knitwear with sequins hand sewn
Creating this textile I used two layers of light blue tulle and created this bramble pattern from my sketchbook and machine embroidered the pattern onto the base
Machine embroidery on tuelle
Using a punchcard on the domestic flat bed knitting machine it read this floral pattern and then hand attached sequins into the middle of each flower
Digital Design boards of 6 look lineup
This part of the project was during the beginning of lockdown so I create a digital 6 look lineup, showcasing the textiles I had created earlier in the project.

I designed in a way by analysing the silhouette and shape of Dries Van Noten. Using my textiles then to influence the outcome of my designs.
This is the 6 look lineup I created on illustrator to display how the pieces would have been created
