Samhain PROJECT
About:
The Samhain Project was a collaboration between FTPC and Lumen street theatre who organise an annual parade on halloween. They collaborated with our course to design and make costumes for the parade which can be used time and time again. The parade is based on the poem 'Thady and the Bishops Lady' I was particularly drawn to the idea of this character just being known as someones bride, destined to haunt people over thousand bridge forever. As I developed my character I was reminded by the character in great expectations lady Haversham who was jilted at the alter and spends the rest of her life in her wedding dress, becoming the eternal mourning bride waiting for her love to come to her.
Sketchbook Pages
Began researching into the poem 'Drunken Thady and the Bishops lady' was really drawn into the line 'Tis true she lived, tis true she died, tis true she was the bishops bride' I thought this idea of being known as the bishops bride really interesting and reminded me of the character Lady Haversham in Great Expectations. Who was an eternal mourning bride after being jilted at the alter. This developed my character into my mourning bride.
Working on the stand.
I like to develop my design work through seeing how my textiles sit on the stand
Design Work
I develop my design work on from my stand work to see
Swatches
Within my swatches I focused on a lot of manipulation within gathering and ruffles to achieve a lot of volume. Worked on a lot of hand manipulated smocking techniques
With my gathers I used a large straight stitch on the fabric and then hand gathered the pieces together
I decided through my swatching process to use calico for my final costume as it worked well fro my colour story and I was able to additionally tea stain the piece also.
Final Design
This is my final illustration board using, charcoal pencil and pen to highlight the textile on the garment.
I decided from my swatches to create my final design to create it from a heavy weight calico and to sew and attach each ruffle by hand as to not distort the drape of the garment.
Digital Drawing
As part of this project we also had a digital portion of it, where it was constructing board and developing illustrations through different tecniques such as clipping mask, paint tools

Final images
Due to the nature of this year we were not able to have the parade so as part of this project within our professional practice we had to organise a photoshoot to display and promote the Samhain festival for future events. Within this we had to organise and design a photoshoot as part of our professional practice.
